Below are a few sites of interest for students who are here from out of the area and are looking for something fun to do on the weekends.

The Meadow Vista Trails Association - This site lists all the hiking trails on our area, and quite a few are within 5 miles of the School in Applegate. All are free, and there are trails of varying degrees of difficulty ranging from easy strolls to more challenging hikes. Maps are available for download at the website.

Hidden Falls Regional Park - This is a large, wildland park just below the City of Auburn. Auburn is the closest large town to Applegate, and is located about 6 miles away on Interstate 80. This park has many lovely trails leading to waterfall overlooks, creeks, and through natural California woodland. It is free.. Directions can be found on the website.

Empire Mine State Historic Park - We often take students on a tour of the extensive landscaped grounds of this park. The mine and outbuildings can be toured as well as the old stone cottage and the beautifully landscaped gardens surrounding it. There is a small fee to enter the park. Picnic area is free. The Empire Mine is located near Grass Valley, California.

Rob Littlepage is a solid landscape design teacher. His focus on structural design that uses plants as a design element leads to a holistic approach to creating integrated landscapes. Rob has an understanding of the “Zen” of design – know the components so solidly that you can then “Let Go” of them and design spontaneously. He is an artist and a serious scholar of this field.

I found him eager to incorporate new concepts while not compromising his loyalty to the historical roots of design. In addition to this, I like him. He has a good sense of humor and his personality makes the student feel confident and comfortable.
